Review – ENO Sub 6 Hammock

Whether it’s on a beach, in the back garden or out in the woods there aren’t many people who can turn down a lounge in a hammock. The ENO Sub 6 Hammock is designed to be a lightweight and east to use hammock for while out and about in the woods either as a sleep system, or for just relaxing. I’ve had mine for over five years now so long enough to know it’s capable of surviving a good amount of use.

One of the first things that makes this hammock particularly useful is its weight, with the the main hammock weighing ~165g. I also use the ENO Helios suspension system which weighs in even less than that (Note: this suspension system is required for this hammock due to the toggle attachment rather than a carabiner). The combined weight of less than 300g total makes this an incredibly light way of carrying a comfortable seating system to the woods, let alone a sleep system (although you would need to carry other items to use this for sleeping). This is pretty impressive for something that has a carry load of around 135kg (I weigh 90Kg and have sat in this with both my kids). Comparing something like this to any of the lightweight folding chairs which come in at around 1kg there’s no comparison. However, that’s obviously not an exact like for like comparison as chair Vs hammock isn’t a straight fight, each has their place, but within an environment where trees are available the hammock wins.

The hammock itself has a built in storage pocket, which it stuffs into easily and quickly. The attachment points are a toggle at each end fitting snugly into the Helios suspension system making for a fast but secure method of attachment. Securing the suspension system to a tree is incredibly simple, just wrap it around, pass it back though it’s loop and tighten via the  splice adjuster. This takes just a minute or two all in, making this suitable for use even when just stopping for a quick break while out hiking. Often these days having kids with me while out in the woods anything that’s quick to setup like that is a blessing. ENO has a huge range of hammocks, most of which use the carabiner attachment, so if you do go for a different one, make sure you get the right suspension system.

The main hammock is a parachute type material, very thin and so light. It does however feel so thin that the first few times I used it I was very cautious, I must admit I did wonder how strong it would be (knowing the 135kg claims). I’m please to say after 5 years of use this has held up well with no wear and tear at all. I am careful when using it do avoid anything sharp in/near it, as I’m sure that would quickly be the end of it, but even so, it’s still had a toddler drag it through some brambles and survive. One other aspect to the thin nature of the material is that it will offer no insulation at all, hammocks are never good insulators anyway but this will be like it isn’t there. So any colder conditions or overnight use will need some kind of insulation. But, if you’re hammock camping you’ll know that already.

This hammock has now become something I pack any time I’m heading out where there’s trees, it’s hard not to given it’s so light and is so much more comfortable than foam mats or any lightweight chairs of a similar weight. Plus, if it’s wet, stoney or uneven, it doesn’t matter with the hammock. Plus you get to lay back, look up at the trees, it’s hard not to like it.

Overall this is a very good hammock for general use, and with the light weight nature I never even notice it in my pack, so even if I don’t use it there’s no regrets about taking it. If you’re after something to use for a portable sleep system, seat/rest and or just laying back enjoying the outdoors then this hammock is definitely worth a look.
